Happy Autumn Equinox!

I hope that everyone enjoyed the first official day of fall. We had a very busy day, but we definitely enjoyed ourselves and I thought I'd share one of the ways we celebrated the new season.

There is a balance of light and dark on this day, and I was wanting to incorporate balance into our celebration. So tonight we got together with some great friends and had a spoon race! It was as simple as you could get, but they had fun with it. I gave each child a wooden spoon and a small decorative pumpkin to balance. They lined up at the starting line and had to race to the finish line while balancing the pumpkin. If the pumpkin fell, they had to stop where they were and count to five before resuming.

They dropped it a lot in the beginning, especially R. But it didn't take them long to get better at it. And it was a good discussion starter on sportsmanship (in both winning and losing) and practice. R wanted to give up at first, convinced that he couldn't do it, but we talked about practicing to get better and having a good attitude. And those sweetheart girls cheered to encourage him. Pretty soon he was walking long distances without dropping the pumpkin and he was thrilled with himself. He didn't want to stop playing and practicing even when the girls were ready to move onto something else. They all had a good time, and it turned into a great lesson. It was also fun to watch. The looks of concentration were adorable. I think we'll be having a few mother/son spoon races to practice even more!

What did you do for fun on the first day of fall?

  2. what a fun idea! :) I used to do spoon races all the time growing up but I honestly don't think I've done it yet with my girls!

This would be great to do at our kid's Halloween party! I am going to "borrow" the idea! haha!

Thanks for the inspiration & thanks for sharing on the Sunday Showcase. Hope to see you this week - http://momto2poshlildivas.blogspot.com/search/label/Sunday%20Showcase
